This spring Ilene had the privilege of being invited to the Second International Conference on Existential Psychology at Fudan University in Shanghai. She says:
Based on the warm welcome and collaborative exchanges started two years ago in Nanjing, we continued to find commonalities between Eastern indigenous cultural psychology and Existential Psychology through presentations, demonstrations, and informal collegial exchanges.
Following is an abstract of a paper that Ilene Serlin wrote for the conference related to her work: Kinaesthetic Imagining: A Phenomenological-Kinetic Method to Know Oneself and Reality
This paper presents a form of embodied existentialism based on the concept of “animate form” by philosopher and dancer Maxine Sheets-Johnstone in her revised book The Primacy of Movement, and “kinaesthetic imagining” by Ilene Serlin in her paper “Kinaesthetic Imagining (1996). Both of these concepts show that an awareness of Husserl’s “things in themselves” starts with the body. This challenges much of Western philosophy, but comes close to Eastern ideas of suchness and Zhi Mien.
