Promoting Elder “Walk Ability”

In preparation for the Walk-Ability event,  AgeSong at Bayside Park residents have been mapping out their neighborhood.  Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far:

Created a big map of the neighborhood.

Took photos of popular places of interest in the neighborhood.

Plotted photos of places of interest on the map.

We have had so many contributors from the community:

Tom, Jean D, Ed, and Jack – keep staff healthy by inviting us to accompany them on neighborhood walks.  Jean took us to a pottery yard, Tom showed us the way to watch the trains go by,  Ed and the two Jeans and Tom and others have been to the chocolate factory (and sampled the goodies).  Jack has walked me through the Pet Club across the street to see the goldfish and crickets. Sam modeled in front of Bayside Park and showed us how to exercise in the Wellness Center.

Ed E was a geophysicist for Stony Brook University.  He created the first digital map in the country. Ed is featured in the May issue of AgeSong at Bayside Park and will be an important consultant for us. Bea offered to help us in any way that is needed. We’re also getting wonderful support from the AgeSong students, volunteers, and care partners to join us to map out favorite spots around the neighborhood. Raul Nevarro Rodriguez, who works in dining services for Bayside Park, designed the terrific ECO-Trek logo that will accompany us on our walks.

Thanks for joining us tonight. Thanks Nader, Nate, Raj for joining us tonight.

As we adjourn, Harriet offered to lead us on a mini walk down the halls (this is what we need to do when it rains – Jean D. suggested). All are welcome to join us.
