It was the women’s turn for an outing. Once a week the Lakeside van takes a women’s group and a men’s group in a van to interesting sites in East Bay. Today the women journeyed to the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), located near the Oakland Airport.
How Sad It Is To Be in a Cage
Upon seeing the stray dogs and cats locked behind bars, one visitor said tearily, “How sad it is to be in a cage.” She was reassured by Marti, an SPCA staff member and former recreational therapist, who said, “Dogs need socialization, just as humans do. We take them for walks every day outside and there is a room where several can play together.”
As we observed the dogs and cats of all sizes and shapes in their cages, many of us had fond memories of pets we had over the course of our lives. ”My first dog was a dalmation,” said June. Elvira had cats. ”We have a cockatail at our community, said one visitor, “His name is Lucky Song and he whistles. Elvira took care of him for a year.” Marti suggested that we contact PALs (Pets and Love Shared) a visiting organization that brings therapy dogs to the LakeSide community. Everyone thought that was a great suggestion.
On the way home, we stopped off at McDonalds for mango smoothies.
